Climate attack hits tables
The result of increased temperature, excessive weather events such as flood and storm, affect agricultural activities, threatens food safety. From various research institutes in Europe, scientists conducted a study called ‘fire extremes, food price leaps and more broad social risks’ in July. In the study of the effect of climate change to food prices, scientists gathered reports that reveal the increase of food prices in different countries depending on the climate extremes. According to the study, agricultural products affected by climate change vary depending on the geography.
The warm weather in East Asia affected the wide regions
Severe drought occurred in 2022-2023 in South Europe led to a 50% increase in the annual process of olive oil prices across the European Union (EU). In the early 2024 in the UK, potato prices increased by 22 percent with the effect of precipitation passing air. Hot air waves in 2024 in East Asia led over temperature in almost all of South Korea and Japan, also in the wide regions of China and India. This extreme weather events increased the price of Korean cabbage in September 2024 percent according to the same bear of the previous year. Japanese rice is also 48 percent of the same period. In addition, vegetable prices in China also increased 30 percent of June and August. After hot air wave in Vietnam on February 2024, the prices of robusta coffee increased by 100 percent in July. Following the drought in 2023 in Mexico, 20 percent increase in fruit and vegetable prices at the beginning of the next year.

Global coffee prices rose 55 percent in August 2024. Around 60 percent of the world cocoa production in Ghana and Ivory Coast, over temperature seen in February 2024 and long drought, which has been known for the previous year, affected global cocoa prices. Kakao prices increased approximately 300 percent in a year in April 2024.

Several effects of food price increases
]
The rises in climate-source food prices can also trigger various risks in society. Increased food prices are particularly effective directly in food safety of low-income households. The people of such households can be without resistance to diseases as a result of less nutrition. This situation increases public expenses by creating additional loads on health system. In addition, the increase in food prices leads to the rise of the overall inflation and creates a big risk for developing countries where food prices are high in inflation.
