Population, resources and future: What does a mathematical model say?
Human population showed an unprecedented growth in the last 12 thousand years. Starting with agriculture revolution, this process was speeded with industry revolution, and today the world population exceeds 8,3 billion. But this growth line was always progressed at the same speed. Prohibited in history, battles, technological transformations and environmental changes shaped population dynamics.
A new research published in May 2026 tried to explain this long journey on humanity with a mathematical model. The study developed by Prof. Alessio Zaccone and Mercedes physicist Kostya Trachenko from Milan University focuses on the relationship between population growth and natural resources.
The research does not aim to predict the future precisely. Instead, it is trying to figure out which human societies can remain stable in the long run and become brittle in what conditions.[[T]]]

[12.000 years data, a single mathematical framework
The researchers examined the population data from Neolithic period to present.
It has become possible to feed more people together with the agricultural revolution and the increase of population is accelerated. During the Middle Ages, growth was slower, time secretions and scars due to the rest. Industry revolution has prepared ground to increase energy usage, production capacity and living conditions.
Although these periods carry different features, the researchers indicate that they have developed a common mathematical structure that can open the entire process.
On the basis of the model, there is a simple idea: the demand for energy, food, water and other resources is also increasing. The balance between the demand for human activities with the renewing capacity of resources determines the long-term stability of the system.
[
Why is the balance between rifles and resources important?][
According to the study, population dynamics can not be evaluated alone. Change in human count; direct connection with the status of consumption habits, energy use, agricultural production, water resources and ecosystems.
Therefore, the population of researchers acts as part of a larger system, not as an independent variable.
Reduction of water resources in a region is not only an environmental problem. It affects agricultural production, creates pressure on food safety and gives economic results. Similar climate change does not mean only temperature rise; it becomes a factor that affects the availability of resources and the durability of societies.
The point that the research has taken into consideration is that: Population, economy and environment are not independent from each other.

What scenarios do the model look?]
Research tests how the system can behave under different conditions.
In some scenarios, the increase of population can gradually reach a more balanced structure. In this case the balance between the use of resources and the regeneration capacity can be maintained.
However, resources are rapidly reduced, increasing environmental pressures and more serious fragility can occur in scenarios where the system weakens the capacity of harmony. The researchers note that population dynamics can vary significantly in such cases.
Here is the critical point: These are not guessed, the scenario.
The study shows how the system can behave under certain assumptions. The future does not necessarily claim that it will happen.
Can you explain everything in thematic?]
Mathematical models offer powerful tools to understand complex systems. However, it is not possible to predict the future precisely. [
New technologies, political decisions, international collaborations, transformations in energy systems and can change the results of social behavior models.
For example, developments in agricultural technologies in the past or advances in the field of health have significantly affected population dynamics. Similarly, innovations that may arise in the future can also turn the relationship between the use of resources and the population.
Therefore, the value of the research is due to the fact that it does not predict the future, but the risks become visible.
Environmental sources and long term stability[
The basic message revealed by the research will not be considered independent from environmental sources of human societies.
Water, soil, energy and ecosystems are not only inputs of economic activities, but also basic elements of social stability. Sustainable management of resources is critical in terms of long-term prosperity and durability.
The study points out that the relationship between population growth and resource management is becoming more important in the future. Therefore, sustainable development, environmental protection and resource efficiency policies can be decisive not only for the environment, but also for long-term stability of societies.
Although mathematical models do not give exact answers, which helps to show the risks to be taken into account. The future of humanity can not fit a single equation. But such studies allow us to better understand the precise balance between population and natural resources.
