The effects of global warming are not limited to temperature rise only. Every year, the fast-paced mountain frosts, not only natural beauties, but also unique data on the climate history of mankind. These ice masses that accumulate the changes in the atmosphere for thousands of years, volcanic explosions and air components, in fact, the most reliable history of the planet. However, these quiet archives are under the threat of the fact that the climate crisis is not present in a rapidly climbing. Here, in the face of this threat, the history of international scientists scored a step: in Antarctica, the world’s first calorie shelter was opened in full scientific purposes. ‘Buz Memory Shelter’ (Ice Memory Sanctuary) is intended not only to protect our climate memory.

What is Memory and why is it important?][
Ice Memory is an international science initiative that started based in France in 2015. The basic goal is to quickly store the samples taken from the scatter iceuls due to global warming in a safe way for future generations. Because these frosts are not only water but also data about past atmosphere conditions, climate cycles and environmental events. Every frosted nucleus accommodates thousands of years in it. Thanks to these tracks, scientists can analyze the effects of temperature changes in the past, volcanic explosions and the spread of human-borne pollutants in the atmosphere. However, high altitudes with the source of this data face the danger of being destroyed today. That’s time to move this information source to the future. Here at this point Ice Memory is activated. This initiative aims to keep the future centuries inherited to scientists by storing examples from ice areas all over the world, in a safe way, in the natural ice fit created in Antarctica. Thus, a ground is prepared to answer the questions we cannot solve today. [

How does it work to fit in Antarktika?]
] At the beginning of 2026, the officially opened calorie is located at the Concordia Station in the heart of Antarctica. In this region at about 3 thousand 200 meters above sea level, naturally minus 50 degrees for the temperature year. In this way, storage space can store ice cores in ideal conditions without requiring no mechanical cooling. The shelter consists of a 35-meter tunnel with about 10 meters of the surface. Currently, the 1.7 ton core examples of Mont Blanc in France and the Grand Combin iceuls in Switzerland are protected here. Samples were sent to the region after a hard sea and air trip, starting from Italy’s Trieste Port and 50 days. The reason for choosing Antarctica is not only climate. The political impartiality of the region is also important. This continent protected with international antifications will be possible only on the basis of scientific liquor, since it is not under the domination of any country. This is a great advantage for long-term security of the archive.

A scientific inheritance left to the future
Ice beans are not just about frozen water mass. Each layer carries climatic tips on thousands of years ago. Thanks to the dust particles they drink, air bubbles, gas components and isotops; the temperature fluctuations of history can be obtained in detail about greenhouse gas rates in the atmosphere, volcanic explosions and human effect. However, the mountains around the world quickly disappear due to global warming. Science people agree that these unique nature archives should be protected completely without melting. Ice Memory project is therefore intended to answer the scientific needs of the future, not only today. The team carrying out the project predicts that these examples will be analyzed again with non-existent technologies. In this way, undetectable information with scientific limitations can be revealed in the future. Ice Memory Foundation Vice President Carlo Barbante’s expression“The secrets we haven’t met today will talk again in these ices a day. “

Why critical cooperation and political neutrality?]
]] Antarctica is a symbol of scientific neutrality, beyond being one of the most isolated and preserved areas in the world. This continent, which does not belong to any country, may only be used for peaceful and scientific purposes within the scope of the Antarctic Treaty dated 1959. That’s why it’s the most suitable place for ‘Buz Memory Shelter’ that will protect global climate heritage. Countries and scientists participating in the project are moving with the aim of building a common future on behalf of humanity, beyond political borders and interests. It is not the property of any country of the stored samples and is only open to access on scientific content, but it is consolidating this neutrality. At the same time, the constant temperature under minus 50 degrees, naturally offers long-term storage without requiring technological intervention. In this way, it provides a durable protection against electrical interruptions, hardware failures or maintenance needs.
