The UN will protect biodiversity in open seas
The agreement was provided after years of negotiations for the protection of biological diversity in open seas (BM), in the United Nations. The agreement was held in New York for two weeks after the 5th session of the intergovernmental conference, the last two days in the BM building, as a result of uninterrupted negotiations that last for about 40 hours. Over 20 years, the agreement is aimed at protecting the biodiversity beyond the national sea jurisdictions of countries. There is a negative impact on biodiversity of matters such as climate change, excessive hunting and transportation traffic in this area covering about three of the seas.

The agreement will also bring restrictions to fishing activities in these regions, while also limiting sea mines, sea transportation routes and exploration activities. The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the agreement evaluated as an important step in the context of climate change, “I congratulate all parties. Now and for future generations, I spoke to the days we will continue to work together for a safer, healthy, durable and efficient ocean. The agreement in the UN is expected to be officially accepted.
